Summer time, and the livin’ is easy! We miss having the house a-buzz every Friday night, so we thought, Hey! Let’s just do a student Friday night dinner during the summer! Please RSVP by Thursday.
For more info about CH.I.L.L. events, click here.
Chabad hosts 30-45 Queens College students and their friends every Friday night for that inimitable Chabad atmosphere! Homemade food, great singing & words of inspiration are the hallmark of Shabbat dinner with Chabad. Shabbat morning services begin at 9:30am and are preceded by a class in Chassidic Philosophy at 8:45am. Lunch follows services. As space is limited, RSVP is required; all meals and services take place in the Chabad House unless otherwise noted.
Numerous times throughout the year, Chabad features guest speakers and/or special Shabbat programs. Guest speakers this past year included: QC Rabbi Moshe Shur; Prof. TIm Rosen; CUNY Law student Eli Federman; QC Vice President Dr. Joe Bertolino; Rikers Island Social Worker Itamar Rosenblatt; and QC Alum Daniel Epstein ‘06.
Special Events during this past year were: Pink Shabbat; International Shabbaton in Brooklyn; Green Shabbat; Northeastern Shabbaton in BInghamton; Sushi Shabbat; and Bring A Friend Shabbat.
Other past guest speakers include: QC President Dr. James Muyskens; Dr. Velvl Greene, Ben Gurion University; Rabbi Tzvi Freeman (Chabad.org Ask the Rabbi); Dr. Ed Susskind, psychotherapist.
I want to first congratulate Chabad for all of the wonderful work that your organization is doing. It is wonderful to see so many of our students engaged in enhancing the spiritual life of our QC community.
- Dr. Joseph Bertolino, Vice President for Student Affairs
I want to thank you again for the lovely Shabbat meal; it really was an enlightening experience. I don’t often celebrate Shabbat so I was able to learn/experience something new that evening.
- Jennifer Levine, ‘05
This Shabbos was unbelievable. It should definitely happen more often!

Welcome to Chabad of Queens College Shabbat on Campus frequently asked questions. Below you will find popular question students have asked about our S.O.C.s. If you have a question that is not listed, please click on the contact link and fire away.
1. Does a student have to be a ‘member’ of Chabad to join a S.O.C.? You need not purchase any membership to attend Chabad events such as Shabbat On Campus. If you would like to receive our weekly email, please click here (bottom center).
2. What if I’m not a student? Although our programs are designed for the average-aged college student, older students or non-students may attend programs. A suggested minimum donation of $18 per event is recommended.
3. I’m vegetarian — will there be anything to eat? Although our Shabbat meals always have meat or chicken, there are always plenty of vegetarian options: homemade challah, dips, veggies, rice and more. In fact, the Rabbi himself was a vegetarian for a decade!
4. How much does it cost? Shabbat is free for students! Like all Chabad of Queens College programs, Shabbat is made possible by the generosity of individual donors. To make a tax-deductible donation, click here.
5. Can I bring a guest? Sure! Please let us know in advance by RSVP’ing on this site.
6. Do I have to come on time? What if I need to leave early? At Chabad, we have a strict open-door policy. That means that you come as early or as late as you like, and you leave whenever you’re ready.
7. Do I need to know any Hebrew or are there any prerequisites to attend? You don’t need to know Hebrew, or for that matter, anything else! All of Chabad’s programs are designed for Jewish college students; no previous experience is necessary.
8. What can I do to help? Boy did you ask the right question! There are various ways to help out at Chabad. Please contact us at 347-688-4770 or info@qChabad.org to volunteer; you can make a difference!
9. What is the religious content of Shabbat? Shabbat with Chabad is a relaxed environment. People of all backgrounds and affiliations attend Chabad programs across the world, and Chabad of Queens College is no exception. Shabbat prayer services are optional. Although we would love if you participate, this is not a prerequisite to enjoying the warmth and camaraderie of the meal! The Rabbi always shares thoughts of Torah and inspiration during the meal.
10. Are there ever guest speakers? There are numerous guest speakers per semester. Past speakers have included: President James Muyskens; VP Joe Bertolino; Rabbi Tzvi Freeman; Dr. Ed Susskind; Mrs. Molly Resnick; & “Comic Book” Rabbi Simcha Weinstein.
11. I don’t live in Kew Gardens Hills. Is there somewhere I can stay for Shabbat? We have a team of dedicated students who will try their best to arrange hospitality. Please contact us via this site or call the office at 347-688-4770.
12. Where does Shabbat On Campus take place? All Shabbat programming takes place in the Chabad House, unless otherwise noted, at 144-03 69th Avenue (almost the corner of Main Street).
13. I would like to attend the prayer services, but my Hebrew is rusty. Can I still come? All our prayer texts are in Hebrew & English, and in fact, our sages suggest that one should pray in the language that one understands best! Pages numbers are announced. And if you want to work on your Hebrew, let us know… we’ll be happy to help!
To join us for a Shabbat meal during the summer, please call 347-688-4770 no later than Thursday 6pm.
